Enjoying Competition Sport Fishing

What is sport fishing? You could be competing for a trophy or you may be looking to catch the largest fish from all of your friends. Competitions are by far the most popular reason for sport fishing though. You can go both still fishing or fly fishing. You抣l have a specific time frame and depending on the weight and the species that you catch, you may just bring home the big one. The type of line that you use is also important here. The heavier the line, the fewer points you'll get.

There are different types of sport fishing. Bass fishing, shore fishing, fly fishing, big game fishing, troll fishing and ice fishing are some of them. The competitions are based on the group of anglers, the conditions and the type of fish they are after. There is a wide range of options out there. You抣l be able to catch fish like marlin, walleye, salmon, shark, tuna and a wide range of others.

Equipment You'll Need

The equipment you need depends on what type of fish you are after as well as what type of fishing you are doing. You抣l need to have the basics of rod, reel and tackle. Some will allow you to bring along your fish finder while others will not. Make sure you take a moment to see what the rules say.

For bait, you抣l need to take with you抮e the bait that works for the fish you are after of course. You can go from simple things such as lures and spinners to wet and dry flies, shrimp or live fish and other live bait.

Understanding Fishing Line

The type of line used in these tournaments is often lighter than the force that the fish applies to it. Why? It's more of a challenge of course! You should purchase a high tech drag mechanism on your reel to compensate for this. This will keep the right tension in the line when the fish takes off. Only when the fish gets tired of running will you have the ability to land him. It can be quite challenging but that is what makes it so fun, right!

How To Fight The Big Guy

There are several methods that are used to fight hooked fish. One is the use of a game chair. The fisherman sits there and places the butt of his rod in a gimbaled mount. You抣l need quite a long rod for this and it needs to be bent correctly to fit properly. This is not an easy task and you抣l need experience to get it right. Or, you can go with the stand up method. You抣l use a harness this time around. You抣l need to eat your Wheaties for this one though.

Ready to give it a try? You may find yourself shocked by the price of it all. It can cost you up to $25,000 if you purchase everything. You can take advantage of charter services though which will cut down on the supplies (especially your boat!) and you抣l get everything that you need. Take the time to learn with a professional to help you to make the most out of every tournament you enter. Winning the prize can help to lower these costs and make it all well worth it!

Enjoy Your Alaska Fishing Experience

Alaska's fishing vacations are one of the most popular with tourists. With people wishing to escape the hustle-bustle of the daily life, these relaxing fishing vacations are a great way to can get closer to nature.

Salmon is common along the Alaskan coast. So is giant halibut. Visitors can also catch salmon weighing up to 50 pounds. King salmon over 50 pounds are not at all uncommon. Grayling and northern pike are easy to catch in many inland streams. Other varieties of fish, like grayling and northern pike, are easy to catch in many inland streams. And you can fish amid some of the most incredible scenery on the continent.

To be sure, it抯 not perfect. The productivity of most Alaska streams is not high in comparison with those in warmer climes. This means that some heavily fished streams do not quickly produce many large fish, particularly in the Interior. Large salmon runs compensate in many streams, however.

The extreme tides and ocean currents surrounding Alaska creates ideal habitats for baitfish, which in turn attract returning salmon and bottom fish in astounding numbers. Alaska promotes fishing as its main sporting event. Large numbers of tourists visit the place to take part in this adventurous sport.
South-central Alaska is home to the most famous fishing areas in the state. Coastal waters and watersheds embody the place with varied land and seascapes. In addition to salmon and halibut, other fish like trout, pike, grayling, Dolly Varden, burbot, whitefish and other species can be found year-round in the many watersheds that form the main tourist attractions.

Southeast Alaska, sometimes called the "panhandle," is a land of deep fjords, rushing mountain streams and glaciers. Much of the land is in the Tongass National Forest. Summers are cool and moist; winters are cooler and snowy, but much less cold than portions of Alaska not warmed by the ocean. Salmon return in large numbers to thousands of streams. Halibut move into near shore waters in the summer. Several species of trout are available. A variety of bottom fish can be caught. Shrimp and crab can be found in some waters.

Lower Cook Inlet is also a popular fishing destination in the summer months. Clams, halibut and salmon keep the anglers busy throughout the day. The Kuskokwim and Yukon rivers drain most of Interior, Arctic and Western Alaska, which is sparsely covered by trees. Grayling are most widespread in the region, along with trout, pike, burbot, char and shellfish.

It is advisable that first-time visitors should have a professional guide to advise them. It is always wise to visit the place as part of a guided tour, which will provide all necessary fishing equipment.

Sport Fishing Charters: Tips to Get the Best Experience

If you go to an exotic location for your fishing holiday, such as on Hawaii, Canada or in Florida, you know that you will need to hire a boat in order for you to get to the major sport fishing sites. You will see that most popular fishing destinations, such as Fort Lauderdale in Florida or in the Big Island in Hawaii has quite a lot of sport fishing charter operators.

This means that you will have a choice on which sport fishing charter operator you want as well as the crew and captain of the boat. If you want the best experience in sport fishing, you will want to follow these tips in hiring a boat or getting a sport fishing charter.

In popular fishing destinations, you will see that the deep sea or sport fishing charters here are very professional. However, keep in mind that although the crew is almost composed of excellent fishermen who will be able to help you find a big catch, most charters will require you to bring your own food and drinks. Don抰 expect the crew to cook your lunch as they are fishermen and not servants.

Always remember that when you are sport fishing in a tropical location, always bring your sun block. You have to expect to sit in your fighting chair fighting a big one for a long time and you wouldn抰 want to get sunburned in the process.

If you are going fishing in cold climates, such as in Alaska or in Canada, bring cold weather clothes. You wouldn抰 want to go fishing shivering, would you? In Alaska, it can still be very cold even on the summer months.

Most sport fishing charters will have two types of plans. The first is the private charter, where you will be able to rent the entire boat for yourself or for your party. This type of charter is ideal if you have a group of at least 4 people including you.

However, if you are alone and you have limited budget, you can try the share boat option. This type of option is great for anglers who want to mix with fellow anglers from different parts of the world. The great thing about this type of charter is that the group will share the expenses.

But one disadvantage is that you cannot choose the people who you are going to go fishing with. This means that you will need to put up with some undesirables or people you don抰 just mix with.

Another tip that you should always remember is that you should always bring your camera with you. This is very important especially if you love to tell your friends back home about your experience. You need to remember that no one will believe that you caught a very large fish unless you have proof. They will just say that you were exaggerating about the size of the catch. So, bring a camera in order for you to immortalize the moment you bagged or rather hooked the big one.

Lastly, book for your fishing charter in advance, especially if you are planning to go fishing on months that are very popular among your fellow anglers.

By remembering these tips, you can be sure that you will be able to truly enjoy sport fishing.

Buying a Fishing Reel

When buying a fishing reel, it's most important to know what kind of reel you will need depending on what kind of fishing you will be doing. There are mainly three different types of reels and knowing the basics of each will be a great help when going to look at reels.

The closed spin cast reel is the most popular type of reel on the market. This is probably because it is also the easiest type of reel to use, which makes it really great for beginners or those that don't wish to spend a lot of time on their fishing line. This reel keeps the line fully enclosed, causing less tangles in the line. It is also very easy to cast due to the fact that this action is completed simply with the push of a back button. This type of reel is best used when fishing for smaller fish. They are very light and not that expensive, either.

An open face spinning reel is for those that have some experience in fishing and can manage the reel with little trouble. Experienced fishermen seem to prefer these types of reels because they have more control over the fishing line. They are easier to use than bait casters but are still very accurate. The drawback to this type of reel is that they can become tangled easier than closed spin cast reels because they do not line up with the fishing line. When looking at buying them, these types of reels fall right in the middle of the price points of other reels.

Bait casters are the most difficult type of reel to use. However, they are sometimes more preferred by those that spend a lot of time in or on water because they have many advantages for those that can use them effectively. They handle heavy line very well and they are also the most accurate and the easiest to control. They do come with some backlash so a lot of practice is needed when learning to fish with a bait caster. They are also the most expensive type of reel to buy.

Basic Carp Fishing Pointers

Frustrating as it is, carp fishing is awesome. Carp are really good at sucking in and blowing out suspicious baits. It've such an excitement to see the whole action in a fraction of a second as you hang on for dear life while the reel is trembling with a loud noise.

Carp happily devour on the surface as long as you keep the pellets, biscuits, chic peas, bread, and re-hydrated corn coming in, and these are inexpensive baits as well. Just attach them to the hooks, most preferably the bread. Have the biscuits softened by dipping it in the water for about 2 minutes, then, place them in a sealed sandwich bag for about an hour. Since different brands have different textures, just experiment to know which is firm enough to cast. Another way to hook baits is super gluing the pellet into the shank.

Once they get into feeding, let them feel comfortable around the bait. This gives more opportunity for the fisherman since they begin to not feel picky. This tactic can be useful for zig rigs.

As soon as they're feeding, cast the bait but make sure not to drop the bait directly onto the feeding carp. Cast away from the feeding area then slowly draw it in position. While the bait is till hanging, keep the food coming in so as to keep the carp from going away.

How to Set-Up?

?Use a hair rig to increase your chance of catching. As carp taste food first, if they don't like the taste, they won't come near it.

?You may also use a Spider Line, 50 lbs test, then use a leader material that fits the situation.

?Thread the bait on the baiting needle and hook the hair loop. You may also use foam dipped in a flavor as this enhances the attractiveness of the bait.

?Also make a baiting needle by just straightening a long shank hook. Slide the bait on the shank, then slide the bait from the needle onto the hair.

?Using a float is also an advantage because it adds weight for further distancing and the location is easily identified.

?Don't forget the controller float rig. A leader can be used which is attached to the swivel to its mainline of at least 3 feet length with a 10lbs Drennan double strength. A low diameter mono will do just as long as it floats well enough for visibility.

As experts say, it is not the bait that catches the carp but the method in which the bait is introduced. Pre-bait everyday, in one spot for a few days. This makes the carp think that there is a regular source of food for them and by cord of mouth?there'll soon be a school of fish around. Just be patient and it will all work.

Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

Beyond a doubt the best fly fishing rod material is good bamboo properly selected, cured, split, glued, and correctly proportioned. It possesses strength combined with lightness, resiliency, pliancy, power and balance in greater degree than either steel or solid woods.

Formerly anglers and rod makers could draw fine distinctions between male and female Calcutta and Tonkin " canes," but under present conditions good Calcutta is very rare and the word " Calcutta " is becoming merely a trade term. Good bamboo of all kinds is more difficult to obtain and a good piece of Tonkin is better than an indifferent one of Calcutta. Male Calcutta, however, is supposed to be superior to either the female or Tonkin. The cheapest split cane is known as steel vine or African cane. It is light colored and makes up into good, inexpensive bamboo fly fishing rods.

Six Strip and 8 Strip Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

We assume that you know that bamboo is split and then glued together in order to utilize the hard outer enamel and reduce the diameter of the pieces. Some rods are made of bamboo split into six sections (hex琣gonal) and some in eight (octagonal) but the six strip construction is more often used. Some makers claim that the eight strip, being more nearly a true cylinder, possesses better action but this seems to be more theoretical than practical, while the tiny tips of an eight strip rod are likely to be " soft" due to the comparative amount of glue necessary to hold the pieces together. Eight strip rods cost more than the six strip and if the angler wants a round bamboo fly fishing rod they are preferable to the six strip planed down as planing certainly must injure a rod. As a general rule a well-made six strip rod leaves little to be desired.

Special Feature Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods

A novelty in bamboo fly fishing rod making is what is known as the " double built " rods which are made of two layers of split and glued bamboo, one within the other. They are heavier and strong, and it is claimed, hold their shape better, than ordinary rods and are popular for sea and salmon fishing but unnecessary, I believe, in single hand fly rods. An English innovation is the steel center rod which consists of a fine piece of well-tempered steel running as a core through sections of regular split bamboo. The makers claim this construction gives a rod of superior casting power with only of an ounce added weight. Friends who possess rods of this kind are enthusiastic admirers of this construction for heavy fishing.

An American maker supplies a rod of " twisted bamboo " which he claims equalizes the strain and pro琩uces better action. I have never tried a rod of this type so am unable to pass on its merits, but Perry Frazer, in his " Amateur Rodmaking," speaks well of it.

Are You Ready for a Peacock Bass Fishing Adventure?

The only way to keep up with the latest about peacock bass fishing is to constantly stay on the lookout for new information. If you read everything you find about peacock bass fishing, it won't take long for you to become an influential authority.

Now that we've covered those aspects of peacock bass fishing, let's turn to some of the other factors that need to be considered.

Peacock bass fishing is one of the most adventurous and dangerous sports fishing game in the world. What makes it difficult for untrained sport fishers to venture is the target fish -- the peacock bass.

Peacock bass fish has earned a reputation in the bass fishing world as ferocious, very powerful, and a bad-tempered sports fish. It behaves like a largemouth bass on steroids, which makes it difficult for anglers to catch. Once it decides to hit the lure, unsuspicious anglers are shocked because it strikes with such power, dragging away the bait without even caught by the hunters.

Its strength is estimated to be twice more from other large fish. What seems to make peacock bass fish more powerful than other sports fish is their ability of doubling their strength once they surface and wrestle with the angler for the bait.

Many sport fishers do think that a minute or two of fighting with this large bass fish will make the latter tired easily, but their presumption is not accurate. Peacock bass usually have another shot of bursting power coming from the adrenaline that their body is producing, thus it cannot be as easy as catching a regular black bass.

Biological studies show what a peacock bass is and why it is very different to other fishes in the ocean. They are members of the Cichlids, which are reputed to be the most highly evolved group of fishes. Peacock bass is often classified as a predator, which feeds entirely on small fishes.

It is usually found in the oceans of South America and Amazon. Its speed, strength, size and ferocious nature make it easy to hunt for prey. Similarly, to a largemouth bass with huge, bucket-like mouth, peacock bass do swallow up other fishes of smaller sizes at the same time for their meal.

Three species of these sport fish are found in the Amazon. Brazilian natives as the Cichla Temensis or the "tucunare azul or paca" know one species of the peacock bass. On the other hand, the Spanish-speaking communities consider them as "pavon azul or pinta lapa". This specie is very sensitive to water conditions and restricted to tropical areas of the Amazon. Its weight is estimated to have an average of 27 pounds.

The second specie is the Cichla Ocellaris, known as the butterfly peacock. Much smaller compared to the pace, it just weighs about 7 to 8 pounds, but they are terrible fighters, ready to engage in a fight for bait.

The third is the Cichla Nigrolineatus, or royal peacock. Its habitat is in fast moving waters and weighs an average of 3 to 4 pounds.

The seasonal cycle of the peacock bass is usually based on the equatorial weather conditions in the Amazon River. Typical of dry and wet seasons, the best time hunting for peacock bass is usually of the first six months of the year, where the water temperature is not so extremely hot.

For easier hunting, anglers are advised to have their bass fishing activities conducted on instances where different rivers in the South American continents reach the lowest water level.

Sports fisher can fish in the Amazon from December through March on the northern area, and from July through November in the southern area. On the black waters of the northwestern Amazonian rivers, however, December through March is the best peacock bass fishing because of the clear waters and the typical dry season, making sport fisher easier for them to hunt the 27-pound peacock bass.

One of the strategies of success in pursuing a peacock bass is the mastering of the fishing technique in relation to the behaviour of the fish. It is advised to at least improve everything an angler knows. They must also take into consideration the biological history of the fish to come up with new techniques and become familiar South American continent's weather when the peacock bass is found and from this, determine the best season for hunting it.

Lastly, the fishing gears such as rods, reels, and baits must be wisely selected in order to cope up with the style of the peacock bass. When everything is set up and ready, the next question is, can you survive the wildest peacock bass fishing adventure?

So now you know a little bit about peacock bass fishing. Even if you don't know everything, you've done something worthwhile: you've expanded your knowledge.

Angling Basics: What You Need To Know About Fishing Reels

No matter what level of experience you have as a fisherman, you will benefit greatly from having the right reel for the job. You can easily learn what you should be using though and improve your skill because of it. There are three different types that you need to consider. These are the casting reel, the fly casting reel and the spin casting reel.

The Bait Casting Reel

These are quite difficult. The line on them is pulled off the rod by the lure抯 weight. It is then thrust forward in the motion of casting. They provide a device that lays the line evenly across the rotating cylinder that acts like the core of the reel. Without a smooth cast it will cause problems when the line is reeled in. The line can become tangled, too.

The Fly Fishing Reel

In a fly fishing real, you need to insure that it has a drag that is very responsive. Then, you抣l need to purchase a reel that can stand the tension and strain put on it by a large fish. These are more expensive reels than other types. Make sure to check to make sure there are no plastic parts on the reel. All metal reels are much more dependable and they make it worth the price.

The Spinning Reel

The closed faced reel is the inexpensive spinning reel. It is also fairly easy to control. This is probably the choice you would make for those who are learning to fish. They have a push button release for casting. They have an opening at the top where the line comes out when you cast. The reel will mount on your rod.

The open faced spinning rod is a more challenging option. It comes in many sizes to fit your needs. The lightest models are excellent for pan fish. Larger choices will help you with game fishing or ocean fishing. The line capacity on these is greater and is serviceable when you are after trout or even salmon. They offer a smooth drag. Although you can start with a closed face, you can improve your skills and move on to the open faced.

If you are only choosing one type of reel, go with a medium speed one. If two, then look for both a low speed and a high speed. Also, you should choose the right reel depending on if you are left handed or right handed. Also, remember that the lighter the line is, the smaller the reel. You抣l need to insure that the fishing line and the fishing reel will work together well.

You can get help with learning what type of reel to purchase from the salespeople at the fishing tackle shop.

Alaska Salmon Fishing

Just the thought of Alaska and salmon fishing in the same mental picture conjures images of grandeur, pristine forest, snowy peaks, and a pole bent double while the line rips through the water. Alaska salmon fishing has been discovered closer than you could expect and more beautiful than all the pictures you've seen. This secret location is...

Alaska salmon fishing is closer than you think. A few hundreds miles north of Seattle is the southern most tip of Alaska. Prince of Wales Island is the largest island in North America and the closest Alaska salmon fishing grounds that has extreme fishing success.

If you choose not to drive up the Alaska Highway you will arrive in Ketchikan Alaska via commercial airlines, and take the ferry over to Prince of Wales Island or a commercial float-plane will fly you over to the island. There are resorts, lodges and guides that will accommodate you based on your vacation budget.

Craig and Klawok are two villages that welcome salmon fishers from all over the world. Coho or King Salmon arrive off the Island of Noyes bringing in the first salmon harvest for the year. There are thousands of miles of inland shores to fish without ever reaching the Pacific Ocean. Most of the king salmon fishing is within a cast of shore. To reach the early arriving king salmon you will need to meet them on the edge of the Pacific as they feed up to the inlets that flow in and around the Prince of Wales.

Expect the grandest of fishing trips with the widest array of visual candy. Gray whales, sea lions, sea otters, puffins, geese, bald eagles, loons, seals, majestic mountains, peaceful lagoons, bear, deer, cranes, killer whales, sea ducks and more waterfowl. A week on Prince of Wales will usually show you afternoon showers and then sunshine. The weather in April will be cool but not freezing. Bring a raincoat and pants. Always practice good stewardship of our waterways when you are fishing. Remember that these waterways were around thousands of years before you and will remain long after we are gone. You can make a conscious decision to leave the areas in which people fish in better condition than when you found it. Take care of our lakes, rivers, and other waterways so that others will enjoy these areas for years to come.

Fishing Kit Basics?

Before going deeper into the technicalities, make sure that a fishing license is secured. To be an amateur fisherman there are basic pieces of fishing equipment needed to complete your exciting journey in the fishing world. Knowing the line type and matching the right rod and reel to the fishing technique is just basic common sense. Match these tools appropriately and expect a more enjoyable experience for a more comfortable fishing. There are several things that causes the reel to turn into a bird's nest, don't worry, even experienced fishermen encounter this every now and then.

The main objective is to match the rod, the reel, the line and the lure. These will only cost a newbie around $25 to $40 and they could last for years. The 3 main issues when shopping for a rod are: Guides that are attached to the rod; Grip or handle holds the rod and could come in either cork or foam. They come in different lengths so the comfort to the user must be considered; and the reel seat where the reel is connected.

Dealers make a lot of fishing rods that could either be single or consist of two or more pieces when assembled. The connection is very simple; just connect the male and female ends together to make sure the guides are lined up. This would only last for a minutes. Sometimes, lubricants are needed. When shopping for a rod, slightly bend it to get the feel of it. Again comfort should be considered when using the equipment.

Rods of any type will work. It should be around 6' long and medium weight. Even a long stick will work. This should be long, straight and flexible so it will not easily break. The most popular rod is Graphite because it is so light yet so strong. Wispy rods should be up to 4m long to be used for long casts in moderate winds.

There are a lot of fishing lines to choose from and it can be very confusing to find the best. It is mostly made of nylon and "monofilament" that comes in spools of different lengths that are called Tests. The larger the fishing line the thicker it is in diameter. Find a piece of a 4lb. or 4 lb. Test that is almost 10' long for the basic rig.

The basic rule is that all the gears should match. To summarize your fishing kit, it should include other stuff as well: net, stringer, line clippers, fishing knife, first aid box, a pail of bait, sunglasses, fishing hat, and talking about the basics, don't forget your SNACKS!
